Creative Nonfiction and Memoir
My Springfed Arts workshops in beginning memoir class meets from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday nights for six weeks. During our sessions, we discuss a short reading which applies to the craft of memoir, and then turn to the reading and response of each participant’s work. Participants bring 4 – 5 pages, double-spaced, each week, with copies for other participants. The group will read together and offer positive suggestions. Fall, winter, and spring sessions are offered.
Beginning Memoir Writing: Tuesday nights, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. beginning October 10, 2017 Register here: [Look for a listing for the fall workshop] Filled for fall session.
- We will read a brief passage of memoir or about memoir in preparation for each session.
- Each writer submits no more than 4 – 5 pages, double-spaced, to the class. Participants comment with positive suggestions for the writing. Afterward, the writer is free to ask or discuss her/his writing.
My workshops are intentionally small (4 – 5 people) in order to give respectful time and consideration to each person’s writing. Our process is relaxed but focused. I believe it’s important to take advantage of the time we have for constructive discussion.
What You Will Achieve
By the end of the six-weeks, each writer should have a good grasp of the issues she or he will address in either continuing a long manuscript or working on shorter pieces. The experience also creates a network of memoirists and a community of writers, and fosters support for the process.

This is for writers who have a full or almost complete manuscript (up to 200 pages) and want to work with a published author on a holistic view of her/his work. (Longer manuscripts will be negotiated). Each week we will read segments from well-known memoir writers and discuss what shapes the personal story into art. Your instructor will provide constructive feedback on your work. It will be important to pace the interactions so that the work can be completed in the four-month period. You can expect an interaction with the instructor for two hours a week.
